They seem to have put Beta into the mail service name permanently :) while there has been a lot of speculation about when this will be removed, there seems to be no end to it.
No one knows for sure .
However, that should not stop someone from getting an account invite. They have allowed every user to invite 100 ppl onto gmail, so the invites are freely available.
They seem to be adding a lot of features into it regularly like auto-responder, multiple language support, RSS etc.
When will gmail get off of beta testing?
It isn't in beta anymore, they just don't let anyone sign up with a new account so that their servers don't get flooded with tons of people trying to create new accounts. You can still sign up with an account through invitation or your mobile phone.
